Man With A Guitar.

                 mike's  sporting  life.

Away from the music, Mike has had a life-long interest in various sports including soccer, rugby, cricket, tennis, climbing and running. Details of his sporting career are below. Check out Mike's site at  www.marathonrun.greatnow.com  if you want to run a marathon.

SOCCER. Mike started playing soccer at primary school and played for the school team on the left wing. His speed and goal scoring ability got him noticed and as a teenager he was invited to tryout for a well-known First Division side, Arsenal. Unfortunately this came to nothing, but he continued to play for various local teams and also when he joined the RAF. His favourite players were Stanley Matthews and George Best.

RUGBY. When he moved on from primary school, he switched to playing rugby. This pleased his father who had played for Leicester Tigers and his university in his youth. As a scrumhalf Mike found that his fingers were in danger of being damaged which would have finished his guitar playing career before it started, so he ceased playing rugby when he joined the RAF.

CRICKET. Cricket was the automatic Summer sport and Mike played from an early age. Starting at school and on into his RAF career he played for many teams through the years. He was an opening bowler and reasonable batsman.

TENNIS. Mike has been a life-long tennis player both at school and later on in the RAF. When he was in Hong Kong the first time round he played for RAF Hong Kong and later on he played in the Hong Kong tennis league for several Hong Kong Cricket Club tennis teams. He won singles and mixed doubles tournaments in Malaysia in 1989 and 1991.

CLIMBING. Mike started climbing at an early age, practicing on the cliffs near his home in Cornwall (UK). He had his first brush with death when he nearly fell from one of these cliffs when his handholds gave way. Luckily the climber behind him succeeded in helping him to hold on until help arrived. His very last climb came in 1991 when he climbed Mt. Kinabalu in Borneo.

RUNNING. Cross-country running was another 'great' school activity that Mike had to do when the weather was too bad to do other sports. He took to it immediately and was in the first 3 in every race. He always came third. Never first or second. Later on he ran track at 1500 and 5000 metres setting 2 records at these distances in the 1980's. Mike went on to run in many races including 5 marathons, recording a best time of 2 hrs 47min 59sec for this distance. OTHER SPORTS. Mike also had some limited success at badminton, table tennis, snooker and archery. He also did a triathlon in 1986.
